What happens to email and MX during a move?

Email is often the most sensitive part of a hosting move, because you cannot afford to miss messages. At Dirham A Day we plan the email side carefully so that mail keeps flowing and nothing is lost during the changeover.

Your email delivery is controlled by MX records - the DNS settings that tell the internet which server should receive mail for your domain. Migrating email safely is really about managing the switch of those MX records at the right moment.

Our approach:

1. We set up your email accounts on our platform first and migrate your existing messages and folders across.
2. Your old mailboxes stay active as a safety net during the transition.
3. When everything is ready, the mail routing (MX) is switched so new email is delivered to your mailboxes on our platform.
4. Because your messages are already in place here, incoming mail lands alongside your existing correspondence, not into an empty box.

During the brief changeover window, as the MX change spreads across the internet, some mail may still arrive at the old server for a short time - which is exactly why we keep the old mailboxes active until the switch is fully settled. That way nothing falls through the cracks.

What you should do:

• Keep your old email working until we confirm the move is complete.
• After the switch, update your email apps and phones with the new server settings, which we provide.
