Verifying that your backup is good
A backup is only useful if it actually works when you need it. It is good practice to occasionally verify that your DirhamVault backups are present and healthy, so you are never caught out.
The simplest verification is to check your restore points:
- Log in to the DirhamHost panel and open DirhamVault.
- Confirm that recent restore points are listed, with recent dates and times.
- Make sure the history goes back as far as you expect for your plan's retention.
If backups are running and recent points are present, your automatic protection is working.
For extra confidence, especially before a major change or relaunch, you can go a step further:
- Do a test granular restore. Restore a single, non-critical file to confirm the restore process works end to end.
- Download a backup and check that the archive opens and contains what you expect.
- Note the backup date so you know exactly how current your latest restore point is.
Verification is particularly worth doing:
- Before any major site change, migration or relaunch.
- After you have made significant changes to your site's structure.
- Periodically, as part of good housekeeping, for business-critical sites.
The reassuring news is that DirhamVault's automatic, off-site backups are designed to be reliable - but a quick check now and then means you go into any big change knowing your safety net is in place.
