How long does a migration take?

How long a migration takes depends mostly on the size and complexity of your site, but for most customers the move is quicker than they expect - and because we keep your site live throughout, the wait rarely affects your visitors.

As a rough guide:

• A small site or blog - a simple WordPress or brochure site can often be moved and ready to test within a day, sometimes much faster.
• A larger site or small shop - more files, a bigger database and email to move take a little longer, but are still typically completed quickly.
• A large, busy or complex site - a big media library, a large online store, or many sites at once takes more time and careful planning, especially to keep everything in sync.

The factors that most affect timing are:

• The total amount of data (files, databases, email) to transfer.
• Whether it is a shop or transactional site needing a carefully timed cutover.
• How many sites or accounts are being moved together.
• How quickly we can get access or a backup from your current host.

Crucially, thanks to our reverse-proxy cutover, your site stays live on its old address while we work - so even a longer migration does not mean your site is offline. You only experience the switch at the very end, and we aim for little or no downtime there too.
