Understanding greylisting
Greylisting is an anti-spam technique that temporarily rejects mail from a sender the server has not seen before, asking it to try again shortly. Legitimate mail servers retry automatically and the message is delivered on the second attempt; many spam systems do not retry, so the junk never arrives.
What you might notice:
- The first email from a brand-new sender can be delayed by a few minutes to an hour, then arrives normally.
- Subsequent mail from that sender is delivered immediately, because the sender is now trusted.
Greylisting is effective and low-maintenance, but occasionally a delay in receiving an expected message (like a one-time verification code) can be inconvenient. If a particular sender is important and time-sensitive, you can:
- Add them to your whitelist in the spam filter so their mail is never delayed.
- Ask us to adjust greylisting behaviour if it is causing repeated problems for a critical service.
On the sending side, greylisting is a reason to ensure your own mail server retries correctly - our servers handle this automatically for your outgoing mail. If you experience a persistent delay from one sender, whitelisting them usually resolves it. Need help adjusting these settings?
