Excluding files from backups

Most customers happily let DirhamVault back up their entire account, and that is the safest default. Occasionally, though, it makes sense to exclude certain files from backups - usually large, disposable data that would only bloat your backups without being worth keeping.

Good candidates for exclusion are files that are large and easily regenerated or genuinely unnecessary, such as:

• Big cache folders that are rebuilt automatically anyway.
• Large temporary files or working directories.
• Huge media libraries you already back up separately elsewhere.
• Log files that grow very large and hold little long-term value.

The benefit of excluding such data is smaller, faster backups and less storage used. The risk is that anything you exclude will not be there to restore - so only exclude data you are certain you do not need to recover.

Because getting exclusions wrong can leave a gap in your protection, we recommend a careful approach:

• Only exclude clearly disposable data - never core files, databases or uploads you cannot easily recreate.
• When in doubt, include it. Storage is far cheaper than lost data.
• Review your exclusions occasionally to make sure they still make sense.
