TTL explained

TTL stands for Time To Live. It is a setting on each DNS record that tells other servers how long to remember (cache) the record before checking again. TTL is measured in seconds.

How it affects you:

• A lower TTL (for example 300 seconds) means changes take effect quickly, but slightly more lookups happen.
• A higher TTL (for example 86400 seconds, or one day) means fewer lookups but slower updates.

A useful tip: before making an important DNS change, lower the TTL a day in advance so the new setting propagates faster, then raise it again afterwards.
