Expiry, grace and redemption periods explained
If a domain is not renewed by its expiry date, it moves through several stages before it is lost for good. Understanding these helps you act in time.
- Expiry date — the domain stops working and your website and email may go offline.
- Grace period — a short window (varies by extension) during which you can renew at the normal price.
- Redemption period — after the grace period, recovery is still possible but usually with an additional redemption fee.
- Deletion — once all periods pass, the domain is released and anyone may register it.
