Troubleshooting

Why is my email not sending?

If your outgoing email is failing, work through these common causes.

  1. Check your SMTP settings. Outgoing mail should use the server host name with port 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS), with authentication turned on using your full email address and password. Plain port 25 without authentication will usually fail.
  2. Confirm the password. If you recently changed the mailbox password in the panel, update it in your mail client too.
  3. Watch for a full mailbox or account limits. If the mailbox is over quota, sending can stop. Free up space in webmail.
  4. Sending limits. To prevent abuse, there are hourly sending limits. Sending a large blast at once can hit them; space out bulk mail or use a dedicated email service for newsletters.

If email sends but lands in spam, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your domain; these authenticate your mail and greatly improve delivery. We can configure these for you.

For website contact forms that don't send, see our article on that specifically; those often need SMTP configured in the form plugin.
