What causes 502 and 504 gateway errors?
502 Bad Gateway and 504 Gateway Timeout errors mean the web server did not get a proper, timely response from the process handling your site (for example PHP). They are usually temporary or caused by something taking too long.
Common causes:
- A slow or heavy script that runs longer than the allowed time (504).
- A traffic or resource spike temporarily overwhelming the application.
- A plugin, import or backup task that is too large to finish in time.
- An issue with a proxy or CDN (such as Cloudflare) in front of your site.
What to try:
- Reload after a minute; brief 502/504s often clear on their own.
- If it started after a change (a new plugin, a big import), undo or pause it.
- Check for a long-running task, such as an oversized import; break it into smaller batches.
- If you use Cloudflare, check its status and confirm SSL mode is Full.
