Do I own my domain?

This is a great question. Technically, domains are registered (leased) rather than bought outright — you hold the exclusive right to use the domain for as long as you keep it renewed. As long as you renew on time, the domain remains yours and no one else can take it.

What this means in practice:

• You are listed as the registrant (owner) and control the domain.
• You can transfer it to another registrar or person whenever you like.
• You must keep renewing it — if it expires and is released, you can lose it.
