How to optimise images in WordPress

Large images are the most common cause of a slow website. Optimising them can dramatically improve loading time with no visible loss of quality.

1. Resize before uploading. Most photos only need to be about 1500–2000px wide. Shrinking a 5000px camera image first saves a lot.
2. Install an optimiser. ShortPixel, Smush or the LiteSpeed image tool compress images automatically as you upload.
3. Use WebP. These modern files are much smaller — enable WebP delivery in your optimiser.
4. Lazy-load. Turn on lazy-loading so images load only as visitors scroll to them.

Choose the right format: JPEG for photos, PNG for logos or graphics with transparency, and SVG for simple icons. Always add descriptive alt text — it helps SEO and accessibility.
